How to Care for Your Havu™ Sauna hat

STEP 1 - AIR DRY

After each sauna, hang your hat in a dry, well-ventilated spot and let it air out fully.

Don't keep it in a closed bag while it's still damp.

Merino is naturally odor-resistant, it rarely needs more than this.

STEP 2 - STORE FLAT

Once fully dry, store flat in a cupboard.

Treated this way, your Havu will hold its shape and softness for years of weekly use.

Every several uses, or when it genuinely needs cleaning, hand wash in cool water with a mild wool detergent.

Gently squeeze, don't twist or wring. Rinse thoroughly and press excess water out with a clean towel.

What does a sauna hat do?

A sauna hat keeps the most intense heat off your head and hair. Heat rises, so your head sits in the hottest part of the room, and a wool cap takes the edge off that peak heat so you stay comfortable through a longer session.

Is a sauna hat actually necessary?

It is not strictly required, but it makes the difference between cutting a session short and sitting through it. Without one, the heat hits your head and hair directly. With one, the sauna stops being about your head and becomes about the rest of you.

Why merino instead of regular wool felt?

Merino has a finer fiber than standard felt, so it sits softer against your forehead without the scratch. You get the heat protection wool is known for, in a hat that stays comfortable over a long session.

Do I wear it wet or dry?

Dry. The whole point of a sauna hat is to insulate your head from the heat, and soaking it works against that. Put it on dry, leave it on through the session, and let the wool do its job.

Does it protect my hair from the heat?

Yes. Dry sauna heat is hard on hair over time and can leave it brittle, and a wool cap sits between your hair and that direct heat. It is one of the quieter reasons regular sauna-goers wear one.

How do I wash it, and will it shrink?

Hand wash in cool water with a wool-safe detergent, press the water out without wringing, and lay flat to dry. Keep it away from the dryer, radiators, and direct sun. Heat is what shrinks wool, not washing.

What size is it? Will it fit me?

One size, made to fit most adult heads. It works for head circumferences of about 22 to 24 inches, and the wool gives slightly for a snug fit rather than a tight one. Measure around your head just above the ears.

Can I use it in an infrared sauna?

In a traditional or hybrid sauna, yes. The air still gets hot enough that head protection keeps you more comfortable. In a lower-temperature infrared cabin the heat is gentler, so a hat is optional rather than essential.

Will it start to smell?

Wool naturally resists odor, so airing it out after a session is usually enough and it rarely needs washing. Hang it somewhere dry and well ventilated rather than leaving it balled up in a bag.

Is this the same as a banya hat?

Yes, same idea. Banya is the Russian name and sauna hat the Finnish-rooted one, but both are wool caps that protect your head from the heat. This is the sauna-tradition version.
