How to Use a Sauna Bucket to Make Löyly

Fill with just enough water

Fill the bucket roughly half-full. That gives the ladle room to move and keeps water from sloshing on the way to the heater.

Pour in measured amounts

Small ladles give softer, drier heat. Larger ones give humid, hotter heat. Either way, never dump the whole bucket onto the stones.

Wait between pours

Let the steam build and settle before the next pour. Löyly is a rhythm, one pour every few minutes, not all at once.

What is a sauna bucket and ladle for?

The bucket holds the water you pour over the heated stones, and the ladle is the tool you pour it with. That splash of water on hot stones is what creates the rush of steam Finns call löyly, the moment that turns a hot room into a sauna.

How much water should I pour at a time?

Less than you think. One ladleful, roughly 5-10oz, hits the stones, turns to steam, and changes the room. Wait between pours so the stones reheat. Drowning the rocks in water cools them down and ruins the next round.

Why aluminum and bamboo instead of wood or plastic?

Wood splits and leaks over time. Plastic warps under sauna heat and can off-gas. Anodized aluminum stays stable across years of heat and humidity, and the bamboo handle gives you something cool to grip. The set outlasts both wood and plastic.

Won't the aluminum get hot to the touch?

The body does heat up from sitting in a hot sauna, which is why the bucket has a cool-touch bamboo handle and the ladle has a bamboo grip. You hold the bamboo, not the aluminum. The body itself stays where it belongs, off your skin.

Does the aluminum rust in the humid sauna environment?

No. The aluminum is anodized, a sealed surface treatment that resists rust, corrosion, and humidity damage. Standard untreated aluminum would corrode over time. Anodized aluminum is the version built to hold up to repeated sauna conditions.

Can I add essential oils or sauna scents to the water?

Yes, and it is a traditional way to scent the steam. Add a few drops of sauna-safe essential oil (eucalyptus, pine, or birch are classic) to the bucket water before pouring. Never pour undiluted oil directly on the stones, which can flare up.

How do I care for it between sessions?

Empty the bucket after each use and wipe it dry. The aluminum and bamboo are both built for repeated sauna use, but standing water between sessions is unnecessary stress on the bucket and the handle. Store somewhere ventilated, not sealed away wet.

Can I use this in an infrared sauna?

No. Infrared saunas heat your body directly without the stones-and-steam cycle, so there is nothing to pour water on. Buckets and ladles are for traditional wood-fired, electric stone-heated, or hybrid saunas only.

Will it crack or leak like my old wooden bucket?

No. Wooden buckets typically last about a year before they start to leak, they dry out and split, and the only way to slow it is to keep water sitting in them at all times. Anodized aluminum does not crack or dry out.

Do I actually need a bucket and ladle?

It depends on sauna type and preference. The bucket and ladle give you control over humidity and make the session feel authentic, but they are not strictly required. In a traditional or stone-heated sauna they are how you make löyly. In an infrared sauna there is nothing to pour water on.

Does it require assembly?

Yes, but the assembly is really easy. All you need to do is attach the ladle wooden handle to the scoop with a screw that is provided.
